To mark her 18th birthday, Charlie Lagarde from Quebec purchased a bottle of sparkling wine and a $4 scratching card. Amazingly, her first ever lottery ticket was a winning one.
After realizing she won Charlie had a decision to make.
She had to choose between getting her prize in a C$1 Million lump sum, or splitting it to a $1000 a week, for life.
Charlie did the right thing, consulted an advisor, and chose the $1000 option. It was the right decision.
“It’s without taxes so it’s equivalent to a salary of more than $100,000 a year, so it’s a great start in life for that young lady,” Patrice Lavoie, a spokesman for the lottery corporation, told the Canadian Press.
The lucky winner said that she plans on investing in her education, as well as spend some on traveling.
“I want to study photography. One of my dreams is to work for National Geographic,” she said, according to the statement from lottery officials.
Most lottery winners will take the one-time payout when given the choice, but the experts’ opinion on what is the best decision are still split.
All the experts will agree on one thing. The fact the Charlie Lagarde is a down to earth, smart and grounded young lady.
